Saponified coconut oil and sodium bicarbonate are two of the natural ingredients The Skinny features in some of our best-selling products. Here is a brief explanation as to why we love them, and why we incorporate them into our shampoo bar and deodorant!
Many of us look into the ingredients of a product we are considering purchasing. However, when we come across terms we’re unfamiliar with, we may make incorrect assumptions about how the product is created. Is it natural? Does the product include unfriendly chemicals and synthetic ingredients? These are all valid questions, and it can be difficult to determine which companies are being honest about what ingredients they include in their products.
At The Skinny, we are honest about our ingredient choices and explain how different ingredients can be beneficial to your body and your skin type. We often answer questions about two specific ingredients that we use: saponified coconut oil and sodium bicarbonate. These ingredients are used in our Shampoo Bar and our Deodorant, and yes, they are natural and clean!
What is "Saponified" Coconut Oil?
According to Healthline.com, saponification is the process of oil and lye (sodium hydroxide) being combined and then heated. Oil (or fat) and lye are the two main ingredients in soap, and when the two are heated together, soap is created. Coconut oil is a great ingredient to use in soap, thanks to its moisturizing components and soothing abilities. By incorporating coconut oil into our Shampoo Bars, hair will be hydrated, color will remain, and there will be no excess oil or build up!
Another benefit of our Shampoo Bar is that, because of its amazing lathering ability, it can be used from head to toe as shampoo, body wash, shaving cream, and hand soap! Convinced? Go ahead and clean out your toiletries and make the switch to clean products!
What is Sodium Bicarbonate?
Sodium bicarbonate (better known as baking soda) is used in deodorant in place of common ingredients such as aluminum, parabens, and other synthetic chemicals. Healthline.com states explains that baking soda is extremely effective at absorbing odors, and also has antimicrobial benefits. Sodium bicarbonate can sometimes be irritating to those with sensitive skin, but including coconut oil in our Aluminum-Free Deodorant helps reduce the risk of irritation because of its ability to promote healing and prevent irritation.
