How often should a baby poop?

Not all babies poop as frequently as you might expect. There are a couple reasons for this. First, due to the nutritious nature of breast milk, sometimes a baby’s body absorbs most of it, which results in very little to travel through the digestive tract. When this is the case, a breastfed infant may poop as little as once per week. Second, some babies just have a slower digestive process which means they won’t poop as often. When to talk to your baby’s doctor

In any case, consult your doctor if you suspect your baby might be in pain when trying to pass a bowel movement. These are other things to make note of and bring up to the doctor:

  1. Difficulty or discomfort when pooping
  2. Bloody or black poop
  3. Hard poop
  4. Rare or infrequent poops (baby should poop at least once every 5 to 10 days)

What causes constipation in babies

Babies that are exclusively fed formula are much more likely to have constipation because it firms up poop more than breast milk. Additionally, a baby with a milk-protein allergy or intolerance is also more likely to experience constipation; milk-based formula or the dairy passed through a mom’s breast milk can cause this.

Note that when your baby switches over to baby or table food, what he or she consumes will play a role in what kind of poop is produced. Foods such as applesauce, bananas, and rice cereal have a track record of contributing to constipation.
