What Is Lauric Acid?

Lauric acid is as a natural compound that contains germ killing and disinfectant properties. When consumed, your body converts the lauric acid into monolaurin. Monolaurin is a monogylceride that attacks lipid-coated viruses in the body. This simple fatty acid is shown to have anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoa properties. Lauric acid is also known to kill bacteria and fungi.

Coconut oil is great because there are not that many sources of monolaurin in our modern diets. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid. In fact, of the fat content in coconut oil, around half is made up of lauric acid. While lauric acid rarely occurs naturally, coconut oil has the highest percentage of lauric acid of any substance on earth! Another substance that is high in lauric acid is mother’s milk.  The nutrients in mother’s milk must be delicate yet effective at boosting immunity. Thus, this helps show the safe and non-toxic nature of this nutrient. Daily recommendation of intake of lauric acid is about 10-20 grams, which is about 2-3 teaspoons a day of coconut oil. This simple fatty acid nutrient is credited as the power behind the preventative, curative properties of coconut oil.
